  1. That was run to read, Rita. Every now and then I do wonder about these funny little aspects of modern communication. I suspect what's behind it all is that we are in such a hurry these days that every possible shortcut is being invented and utilised. Not sure it's such a positive thing in the long run though. Perhaps it really means we're less and less inclined to slow down and take the longer, perhaps richer route.

    1. Amen, Carol. Wise words from a lady who knows. I just heard an interview with another psychologist who said we're cramming every single moment with "stuff". We need quiet time just to let our creative minds "daydream".

    2. I like that idea: letting ourselves daydream!

  2. What an interesting post Rita. Thanks for the entertainment. I would use a ! But the latest review on my book tells me that I use it too much and it needs to be removed from my keyboard. Ah. If only she knew the hundreds that were removed in the editing process. I'm an extrovert and love that little emphasis. Now I know it means joy I like it even more. Maybe I'll use a newer expression. :)

    1. OK, Jo. I'm off to check my M/S. But they wouldn't dare take away our little :) would they? We need our little happy face at times.

  3. What a fun post, Rita. Thanks for sharing the history of these little thought about punctuation marks. I can't say I'm happy about the dis-popularity of the exclamation mark either. Oh well. What can you do, other than use it whenever and however you want!!!!! :P

  4. Hi Rita,
    I think the @ is a most elegant symbol. I remember practising how to write it fluently back 10-15 years ago when we all started using email. I love those little finger monkeys and wish we could have them here as pets.

  5. Hi Paula,
    It was great catching up with you at the writers' conference!

    Yes, elegant is the word for it. But do you know Blogger disdains it? Also the ampersand. I had to repeat my blog because it wouldn't accept these symbols in the labels section.

    So there, @@@@@@@. !!!!!!! and &&&&&&&.

  7. Fascinating info Rita.An old song by Kitty Kallen called that Rita. My mother had it on 78rpm. Probably no-one hardly these days knows what that means.
