Finding Inspiration

Normally, this time of year I’m travelling. Autumn in the northern hemisphere is my favourite time to travel. Italy, France, Norway, Finland, Vermont, Maine, and Canada are all beautiful in the fall.

For the last fifteen years, I’ve travelled for at least two months of every year and every time, my mind was expanded as I experienced new languages, new places, and met new people.

My writing is inspired when I am experiencing new things.

My faith also informs my writing. Ideas that are God-breathed and God-inspired flow out of my soul like no other.

Things in everyday life inspire me–people I meet and things that happen all spark my creativity and inform my writing.

I guess we writers are like magpies. We collect inspiration in so many ways.  We catch snippets of conversation, enjoy art, watch movies, see plays, read widely, get intrigued by news items, laugh at, or thoughtfully consider, Instagram memes, and so much more.

Sometimes though, we need to be intentional about inspiration. During the Covid-19 pandemic, the lockdowns, and travel restrictions, I found the well of my inspiration running a little dry.

So, I’ve done a few things lately to try and inject a little more inspiration into my life. Here are four things that have been inspiring me:

 1. Volunteer: I’ve begun a volunteer job at my local church in their community services department. In this role, I interview people who need emergency relief. The church provides food vouchers, help with bill paying, fuel vouchers, and referrals to others services if required.

Of course, I didn’t just do this to inspire my writing. Writing is a big part of my life but doing something in my community to help others is something I love doing. I’m sure that a by-product of the experiences of working in this environment will inspire something in my writing.

2. Attend A Workshop or Retreat (in-person or online): Recently, I attended a workshop on the topic of writing your story with self-compassion. During the day, I was able to write a new ending for a novel I've been working on for years.

As we shared our writing in small groups, I was inspired by the other writers in the group. I was challenged when I shared my own work. I still feel nervous tension when reading my work aloud, but I love being challenged to keep stretching and dreaming.

The Omega Writers Conference is running an online retreat on October 8 and 9. Why not consider signing up and joining others to be inspired?

3. Do Something Way Out of Your Comfort Zone: In August, I signed up for a songwriting course. I’m not a singer or a musician, in fact, I’m the only non-musician in the group. Why on earth am I doing this?

I thought it might help me to look at writing in a different way. I think doing the course will help develop my writing brain in a new way. Perhaps it will help make my writing more poetic and rhythmic. Perhaps something will be sparked as I listen to other's stories, songs, and music.

The last week of the course requires us to perform the song we’ve written. I’m not sure how I’ll fulfil that requirement but there are some helpful people in the class who said they will help me.

4. Study Something New: Next term, I begin Italian lessons. Since I can’t travel to Italy at the moment, I thought that I’d learn more of the language before I go back one day.

There’s so much that has been taken away from us during the Covid-19 pandemic but it doesn’t mean that we can’t still be inspired. We just have to find different ways to live a life filled with inspiration.

Do you need a creativity boost? Why not try doing something new that will push you out of your normal routines?

What have you been doing that inspires your creativity lately?

CWD Highlights - April to June 2020

Christian Writers Downunder is a diverse group of writers, editors, bloggers, illustrators. As a group we support each other through our Facebook page and blog.

Today's blog will highlight some of the achievements of our members from April to June 2020

New Releases, Acceptances & Cover Reveals

Lynne Stringer

Lynne Stringer released a new science fiction novel, The Verindon Alliance on 1st May 2020 (Published by Rhiza Edge).

As Princess Vashta of the Vendel finishes her combat training, she hopes she will lead their forces into battle against her race’s deadly enemy, the Verindal. But when Brandonin, the heir to the Verindal throne, comes to see her father, it’s clear he desires peace, not war.

When a new enemy arises, striking at all who call their planet home, each race blames the other, even though the princess is sure this danger comes from somewhere new. She seeks Brandonin’s help in fighting this menace, but what can they do when both Vendel and Verindal refuse to work together? Can they defeat this deadly threat themselves or will it mean the end of life on Verindon?

The book (a prequel of the Verindon trilogy) is available here

Lynne Stringer is the author of the Verindon series of young adult science fiction romance books and Once Confronted, a contemporary drama.

Melissa Gijsbers

Melissa Gijsbers has released the first 4 ebooks in a series of writing prompts. The series is called LitPrompts.

Each ebook has 10 writing prompts on a different topic, starting with toilet paper!

The first ebook was published on April 23, with the other ebooks going live on Amazon during May.

All the details of the ebooks can be found here -  and more are on their way.

Helen Brown

In May Reading Stones also released the 2nd Edition of Helen’s Book, Turning Water into Wine and the Revised Edition of 365 Glasses of Wine.

In Turning Water into Wine, Helen Brown takes 100 ordinary "water" moments and describes how God has used these to teach her valuable lessons about life and His love for her. Available here.

365 Glasses of Wine from Helen Brown gives a daily "sip" of inspiration and encouragement. Each story is taken from her real-life experiences of walking, with God, through farming, drought, hardship, family life, and depression. Each story is designed to encourage others as they walk with God.  Available here.

June will also see the release of the 2nd editions of More Water into Wine and Conversations with Myself, by Helen Brown, these both being available after the 30th June.

Congratulations to our authors for their exciting new releases, revision and for all who have been working on their stories during the upheavals and challenges of the last few months.

Introducing the 2020 Omega Writers Conference

Plans are well underway for the 2020 Omega Writers Conference, to be held from 23 to 25 October at Peppers Kingscliff, New South Wales (about twenty minutes from Gold Coast Airport and the Queensland border). Our main organising committee is Raewyn Elsegood, Narelle Atkins, and Andrea Grigg, but there is a team of behind-the-scenes helpers.

Andrea Grigg and I visited Peppers Kingscliff for lunch after the 2019 conference, and I didn't want to leave. Here's lunch:

Prawn and Watermelon Salad
Yum!

The resort is located right on the beach, but there is also a beautiful swimming pool for guests:

Our conference will be in the main conference room, which splits into three breakout rooms:

(That's set up for a banquet—which is what we'll be having on Saturday night, for the 2020 CALEB Award Dinner!)

We also have the Boardroom, for Hub appointments with editors and publishers (yes, Australian Christian publishers will be present):

Attendees can choose to stay onsite in either the Kingscliff or Mantra resorts (the Mantra is right across the road). The rooms are beautiful, and even include laundry facilities:

There are other hotels nearby, as well as a camping ground for those who prefer.

You're probably wondering how much this is going to cost.

Well, if you get a group together and share, it will cost the same as previous years. A standard hotel room shared by 2 people (including twin beds) and breakfast for 2 people is $185 per night. If you split the cost with a roomie, 2 nights accommodation including breakfast will cost $185 per person.

Or bring your family—there are plenty of local activities to keep them busy, from rental bicycles available from reception, to the famous Gold Coast theme parks less than an hour away by car. Or just the conference bookstore, then spend a few hours by the pool with a great book.

Peppers Kingscliff are giving us great rates for the conference: 2018 prices :) So get together with your friends and book now (there's no risk—the resort offers free cancellations up to 30 days prior). There will be a shuttle to and from Gold Coast Airport, although you could also rent a car or Uber.

You can book your accommodation now!

In preparation for conference, Omega Writers are seeking a volunteer to help run the Omega website and get set up for conference. If you have general IT skills, WordPress administration skills and an aptitude for learning new software, and you'd like to be part of the Omega team, please contact Meredith Resce at president @ omegawriters.org.

And now, I'm delighted to introduce two of our speakers:

Susan May Warren

With books translated into eight languages, many of her novels have been ECPA and CBA bestsellers, were chosen as Top Picks by Romantic Times, and have won the RWA's Inspirational Reader's Choice contest and the American Christian Fiction Writers Book of the Year award.

Susan is also a nationally acclaimed writing coach, teaching at conferences around the nation and winner of the 2009 American Christian Fiction Writers Mentor of the Year award. She loves to help people launch their writing careers and is the founder of Novel.Academy and www.LearnHowtoWriteaNovel.com, a writing website that helps authors get published and stay published. She’s also the author of the popular writing method, The Story Equation, and the co-founder of Sunrise Publishing.

Susie is our keynote speaker and will lead our fiction stream. If you write fiction—especially romance or romantic suspense—then Susie is a must-hear speaker.

Amy Matayo

Not really. Not even her kids are afraid of her.

She graduated with barely passing grades from John Brown University with a degree in Journalism. But she's proud of that degree and all the ways she hasn't put it to good use.

She laughs often, cries easily, feels deeply, and loves hard. She lives in Arkansas with her husband and four kids and is working on her next novel.

Amy writes edgy contemporary romance that crosses over from "traditional" Christian fiction, and I'm sure she'll have great tips on writing great books and building a readership as a self-published author.

2020 CALEB Award

I'll be back next month to introduce more guest speakers, and launch the 2020 CALEB Awards!

(Check the Omega Writers website for the 2020 categories.)

Also, a portion of the proceeds* from the CALEB entry fee is donated to the Omega Writers Conference Scholarship Fund. If you'd like to donate to the fund and give a Christian writer the opportunity to attend their first Omega conference, click here to find out more.

And if you want to know why it's important that we offer scholarships to first-time attendees, well, I'll let one of the 2019 scholarship recipients tell you. Click here to read Adam Hickey's post.

(* FYI "a portion" broadly translates as "as much as the Treasurer lets me" :) )

So will you be at the 2020 Omega Writers Conference?

Or maybe you haven’t even considered coming?

I get it. I really do. Life is so busy. Everything else is shouting for your attention. The cost of living has gone up. People can be draining. It just feels too hard.

But what if conference this year were to provide the refreshment you need? What if you were to make connections that change the path of your future? What if you were to re-connect with old friends and make new ones who will be your greatest encouragers? What if this conference, you hear something – even one thing – directly from God that gives you the strength you need to keep going? And what if you develop and grow in ways you never dreamed you could?

It’s not only possible. I would say it's guaranteed.

We understand how busy life is and we understand how hard it is to be a writer and faithfully use your gifts for God to make a difference in this world. That is why our theme this year is:

Find the words that change the world at Jesus’ feet

Omega Writer's Conference Session

We want conference to be a chance for you to hear God’s still, small voice amidst the noise of the world.

We truly believe He has something special for you.

We understand that every Christian writer needs support, encouragement, training and pastoral care. We were never meant to go it alone. This conference is an opportunity for all these things. We have experienced writing professionals lined up, waiting to share their wealth of experience and knowledge with you. We have opportunities for you to meet with editors and publishers. We have chaplains available to support you and encourage you along the way. We have, fellowship and fun and so much more.

If finances are an issue, there is the option of a scholarship for new attendees. (More details to come.)

We are especially conscious of our first-time attendees and will ensure you do not feel alone or unsupported. You will be welcomed with open arms.

This year our special guest speaker is Steve Laube.

Steve is an American Christian Literary Agent, a veteran of the bookselling industry with nearly 40 years of experience.

Steve Laube, Literary Agent

If I can’t tempt you with any of the above, let me try with our BOOKSHOP!

It is well known that writers make the best readers just as readers make the best writers. So, we have a bookshop full of all the newest titles (and many of the old) from Australian Christian authors. Not only can you buy these books, you can have them personally signed by attending authors.

Omega Writer's Conference Bookstall

There are so many more exciting things I want to tell you about the conference, but at past conferences I've learned valuable things like sticking to my word limit so I'll stop. For further details and all the other things I really want to tell you, go to our website.
