Pantser Writer Tackles Taboo Subject: by Jo Wanmer

MY EXPERIENCE TELLS ME  there are some topics that good Christians don’t discuss after church or even over coffee. These topics don’t tend to turn books into Christian best sellers. But they can become literature that pulls important ideas into the open and challenges readers to consider a different point of view. It can also put God in the middle of the mess, not seated high above controversy, unwillling to view the unclean parts of real life.

Francine Rivers wrote about abortion in ‘The Atonement Child'. I appreciate that book because it acknowledges that rape is real. It looks at the cost of not having an abortion, facing the fact that we may be opposed to abortion until it is the only way to save the family’s reputation. Challenging stuff and a great read.

I began to write books because I wanted to tell of the amazing things God has done in our life. That story, Though the Bud be Bruised, included sexual abuse, christian witchcraft and religious superiority, as well as God’s incredible grace and mercy. What I didn’t know was that a series of books would follow, with the same theme, showing a wonderful personal God.
(Pic showing the books where my writing is published)

A few years ago, as I asked God what He wanted me to write next, I felt He asked me to write about pornography. I was unimpressed and suggested He give me a different topic. But there weren’t any other ideas in the heavens! I summoned my courage.  After all there was no harm writing it. Publishing would be the challenge and that was unlikely to happen. I mean who wants to read a book on a taboo subject?

It was NaNoWriMo time. I started. This discipline leaves no time to question anything. Just 50,000 words on the screen in the month. And so began another pantser adventure. I asked the Spirit to write with me and looked forward to the journey. When I finished, I loved the story, the adventure, and the God-revealed truth. And yes, it exposes pornography and brings hope.

Time has passed. Since then, I’ve published El Shaddai and El Roi thanks to Anne Hamilton, of Armour Books. In the back of mymind I knew the next book is the one about porn. I was excited because it
’s a great book, but nervous because it could upset many and may negatively affect my reputation. However obedience is my highest value.

Assistant editor

All nervousness pushed aside, it is now in the final phrase of editing. I sweat over many passages. Is it too graphic? Is it not shown well enough? Why don’t I write books that are fun and comfortable, and not controversial? As God has said in other circumstances, He chose a different path for me. By definition His path is a good path… the best one for me to follow. So, it seems I write about taboo subjects.

How do I know God is in this? Simple things like writing revelation that I’d never thought of before. And when I re-read, I see things at the beginning of the story that become important in the end… not that I knew!

In checking the structure of the book, it is close to right…as If someone (not me) knew what they were doing. This book has two stories running parallel.  They need to be the same length so I checked. The book has about 240 pages. The stories have only two pages difference. Not plotted. Not planned. Just Holy Spirit keeping balance!

The story has a new name in keeping with other books of the series. It’s called El Gibbor, which means Mighty God… the One who does the impossible. It’s this character of God that brings these protagonists to the fulness of restoration.

I have one more book waiting in the wings and then it will time to write a new one. I wonder what adventures God has in store for me next.

Tell me…

  • How do you pick your topics?
  • Are you dealing with other taboo topics?
  • Would you read El Gibbor, knowing it deals with pornography?

Jo Wanmer is a story teller, that has learnt how to turn those stories into acceptable prose. She writes with the help of the Holy Spirit. Without His inspiration, there would be no books. Though the Bud be Bruised was published thirteen years ago. Late in 2024 El Shaddai was released and its prequel, El Roi, was released late last year. She lives, with her husband of  fifty-five years, just north of Brisbane. Family, God and writing are her three passions. Eleven great-grandchildren now fill their home with love and chaos.

Why Write, when cost is so high?

This morning I met with a group of passionate writers. We come together under the banner of Omega Writers Sunshine Coast. Sharing with like-minded people is an encouragement. We laugh, celebrate our wins and share the load.

As I drove home and mulled over our conversations, I asked myself again. ‘Why do I write? Why spend the hours and the dollars to produce another book that I love, but few read?’

At home I opened the emails. My publisher confirmed that she’d love to publish, El Roi, my third book next year. How exciting! One more book in the birthing canal. Another opportunity to spend hours editing, pouring over words that they may skilfully portray the story to a reader. Another opportunity to spend dollars, lots of dollars, on professional editing and printing. Why? So a few people pick up the book and absorb it, be inspired to walk and talk with our amazing God.

My question extended. ‘Why do feel such excitement and satisfaction out of a project that would horrify any business person?’

The answer comes in a quiet idea that sneaks into my mind. ‘I have food to eat that you know nothing about.’ (John 4:32)

Jesus, when he walked with men, was more satisfied by a conversation with a Samaritan woman than he was by the bread the disciples had obtained for him. It reminds me of the opportunities I’ve had to preach. A sermon where I watch revelation awakening in a listener is so satisfying. In one way. In another it often left me depleted, craving a good steak. Even when my physical body wanted food, my spirit was deeply satisfied.

In the gospel John goes on to explain. ‘My food is to the will of him who sent me an to bring it to completion.’ (John 4:34) In other words, following God’s leading was Jesus’ source of satisfaction. Jesus broke a lot of the current social rules and religious expectations as he walked among men. His obedience came at a cost. Yet he delighted to do ‘the will of him who sent me’.

Writing comes at a cost, so why continue? Unlike Jesus I’m not called to save the world…but I am called to inspire others to experience Jesus. I preached for a season and that was satisfying, but writing is the same call with a different look. Written words can reach multitudes. The possibilities are endless.

I write stories because Jesus told stories. If God wants me talk about his light touching lives of those he loves, I could write a teaching book. Or I can write a story. A story can hide new ideas and theology in fast moving action, demonstrate who God is and how much He loves the people of the world. A good book can display the love of God to a protagonist. A reader who relates to the question the heroine struggles with will receive the new truth.

There lies my answer.

My time is the Lord’s. My money is the Lord’s. The Spirit fills me, and brings stories. I continue because the call of God is on me and really there is nothing else I’d rather do.

My next book, El Roi, is coming soon. Dan is trying to find light… and he needs a good father. Here’s a short insight into Dan’s search, if you’d like to get a taste.

“On the end of his bed, near the open window, he sipped coffee and opened the Bible at random.

'Our Father in heaven...'

There's a father in heaven? Dan shuddered. Whose father? His father wasn't there. One thing he knew; he wasn't going to heaven if he had a father there. He read on... 'hallowed be your name.'

Dropping the Bible, he gulped hot coffee. It didn't even make sense. Why was his grandmother so fond of the book? He preferred a God who claimed to be the light of the world, rather than anyone's father. How he could he find more about light? He needed light. The darkness was freaking him out. Flicking through the book, he looked for light, reading bits here and there.

Jesus went up the mountain to pray... why would he do such a thing?

The disciples started to argue... Well, that sounds normal.”

What about you? What inspires you to continue following God, even when it’s costly and time consuming?

Jo Wanmer is a story teller. But struggles to put those stories into accepable prose. She writes with the help of the Holy Spirit. Without His inspiration there would be no books. Though the Bud be Bruised was published thirteen years ago. Last year El Shaddai was released and it's prequel, El Roi, is just been published.

Power of Committment by Jo Wanmer

It's a long time ago. Fifty-four years today. Yet I still remember. More the emotions than the event, for it was an emotional day.

No longer a Miss. Now a Mrs. I was young though I thought I was old and mature. So young my understanding of marriage was simple. I would have a husband to help me live my life and our lives would be like Mum and Dad’s. He expected his life to be like his parents with me adding adventure. He was an introverted introvert. I was a loud extrovert. What were we thinking? Did we even think?

Within a few days several things became obvious. He was and still is an owl. Meanwhile my eyes opened before the sun, my body wanting to rush to the beach to watch the sunrise. He countered my idea with an offer of sunset.

He loved rest and reading. I craved action and adventure. Yes, we were and still are exact opposites. On day two he reached the conclusion that we’d made a mistake.  When he tentatively expressed that opinion, I turned on him, furious. ‘Don’t you ever say that again!’

You see in that era, marriage was forever. I guess fifty-four years later we can say we are well on the way to achieving that goal.

Do I wish I’d done it differently? Yes. In lots of areas but to make mistakes isn’t a reason to quit. Do I wish we’d given up? Not for a moment.

A partnership of opposites develops character, if we allow it, if  we are committed, and we were. Before God, we had promised each other. And so, adjustments began. Compromises, often painful, were necessary. Through them we developed an understanding of each other. And an understanding of ourselves.

He became less introverted. I quietened and learned to listen. In time we realised, we complemented each other. We learned to respect each other's differences. He stopped many of my hair-brained ideas. I pushed him to new adventures. He kept me steady. I stopped him always doing everything the same. After about twenty years we really started to appreciate each other. Now the privilege of a life-long partner is a deep richness that few experience.

I began writing because he gives me space and encourages me. He excels as a coach because I believe in him, even in the early days when there was very little income. And our lives are full of joint memories, some very good, some very bad and many very ordinary. But we share every memory.

Today we mark our fifty-fourth anniversary. We will celebrate in a low-key manner. That’s our way. And we will thank our Lord for His faithfulness, His leading, His presence and the amazing miracle of a long life together.

What does this have to do with writing?

Commitment.

About fifteen years ago my husband pushed me into making a dream chart. A series of pictures that represented my goals. One of those pictures had a mock-up of a shelf of books with my name as the author. It was crazy. My only writing at the time was recording feelings in a journal and two sixteeen page booklets written for my grandchildren.

The visual setting of a goal fired something in me. Ten books became the aim.

The commitment I embarked upon with ‘Writing’ was not an easy journey. Sometimes years flew past when I didn’t communicate with ‘Writing’ even though my first book, Though the Bud be Bruised, was published. You see, we often disagreed. ‘Writing’ can be very legalistic, inflexible, demanding. I just want to tell a story, uninterested in grammar, structure, or position of the comma. Under the seemingly never-ending demands of correct/good writing, I would often quit.

But my commitment would stir me up again and I’d write a short story or blog or even a book. ‘Writing’ and I would then have another disagreement. Discouraged I’d close the creative stream again.

The problem is always the same. I want to just bang out a story. ‘Writing’ always pushes and pulls to fix errors, to enhance characters, to improve the story with better structure.

With a lot of help from a committed friend, fellow wordsmiths, and influence of Holy Spirit I began to appreciate the finer points of ‘Writing’.  My words need to be clear and follow good writing principles to enable my reader to become immersed in the story.

We respect each other now. Without my creative input helped by Holy Spirit
no manuscript would emerge. Without my partner, ‘Writing,’ the words would be too clumsy to read. Without a dream, a commitment, we wouldn’t have formed this relationship and there would be no books. I’m thankful for both ‘Writing’ and that initial push, because I love what we are producing together.

What about you? How has a dream, a commitment, or covenant empowered you?

Jo Wanmer's passion is Jesus and family. Her writing has emerged from her experiences in these areas. The bookshelf above holds books where her stories have been published. We are still pushing to have 'Jo Wanmer' on ten spines. There are three other mini books and El Roi will be published later this year. Two more in the editing phase, but she's itching to sit down with Holy Spirit and create another adventure. Her latest book El Shaddai is getting great responses from readers. It's a book about the character, El Shaddai, and He is unexpected and amazing. If you'd like to read it you can contact her throughFaceBook and get a copy in your hands.

A Hope is only a Dream until written down - by Jo Wanmer

A Hope is only a dream until written down...and then it becomes a goal. It obtains substance. As the good book says, 'Faith is the substance of things hoped for.' Faith activated makes things happen.

Many years ago I attended a business conference with my husband. The speaker challenged us to set a goal for two years time. She taught us how to set goals every week for fifty weeks to make sure it happened. What was my goal? What did I want to be doing in two years time. Not having a business, I set a goal to preach. It was my calling, but I had little opportunity to exercise my gift.

I put pen to paper and wrote down the dream -  to preach ten times in the next two years. It became a goal. I made a simple chart and marked off every five weeks. The task was to prepare one sermon in each time frame. I added the task to my calender and largely forgot the idea. When the reminders popped up, I'd outline a sermon in my journal using revelation the Lord had given me.

The strangest thing happened. About five months before the two year mark, I had preached one sermon, maybe two. I wasn't paying close attention. Then our pastor resigned suddenly. The leadership asked me to preach and organise other speakers. And yes, by the time the fifty weeks was up I'd preached ten times or more. How did that happen?

We must move our hopes and dreams, even our callings from God, into definite written goals.

In my last blog here on 30th May, I wrote about Goals and Deadlines. I shared the steps I was creating to achieve publication. The timeline for my efforts was the Omega conference in Sydney. I'd booked. I was determined to use it to learn enough and make the connections to be published.

Life intervened, as life always does. A wedding was scheduled for the same weekend leaving me with a difficult choice. I cancelled the conference and left my goals floundering without a time line. However I pushed on, fulfillng tasks, editing, determined to get at least one book published.

Sometimes fulfillment comes in unexpected ways. If your eye is firmly on the goal, it manifests even from a different direction. Now, two months after I publically declared my determination to see my books printed, I have an agreement with a publisher. A publisher who produces a polished, professional product. Maybe, just maybe, it will be out by the end of the year.

As excited as I am about this, it has spurred me to greater goals. Two books published a year is the new goal. And I must keep on writing more, so I've decided to join NaNoWriMo in November. At the moment my brian is locked in editing mode, but I have a date to release the creative side of me. It is another positive goal.

And from the days of John the Baptist until now the kingdom of heaven suffereth violence, and men of violence take it by force. Matt 11:12

Our writings are a part of the growth of the Kingdom. Jesus looked for men and women of violence to take it by force. In some little way, I think our determination is helping this task.

What is your goal? Have you written it down? Put it on the wall where you see it often.

My husband pinned a picture of a car on a corkboard. I took no notice. Then one day we decided to buy a new vehicle before the end of June. He was busy. Armed with his instructions I bought a Honda taking the only car they had available. When I drove it home, he pointed to the corkboard. It showed the exact same car, down to every detail - model, leather seats, sun roof and colour. There is such power in a written, activated goal.

Goals and Deadlines by Jo Wanmer

Are you a procrastinator?
How do you make sure you get things done, or do they sit forgotten? We all struggle to get to some tasks. Especially if they are difficult to start and harder to complete.
Take for example the laundry. I mean who wants to wash clothes? Boring, menial task. But yet we manage to do it…repeatedly. Why?
We want to smell good, look fresh, be clean. That’s our goal. And we need the item that is hidden in the laundry basket…we want to wear it tonight.
 A deadline.
And so the job gets done.

A simplistic example I know. But it demonstrates a life principle. To get anywhere worthwhile we need goals. SMART goals. Goals that are Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Recordable and have a set Time limit.
How does that affect our writing? Ask anyone who has participated in NaNoWriMo, the classic writer’s SMART goal, and they will talk of increased productivity.
What is a SMART goal and how do we set them?

Let's look as NaNo’s method to get us productive.
 S - Specific Goal – 50,000 words
M - Measurable – our software counts for us.
A - Achievable – it’s a push, but possible. Thousands have proved it.
R - Recordable – a daily graph comparing where we are in relation to our goal appears when we record our daily word count.
T - Time limit. – One month, strictly.

Therefore, the task for each day, or each week is clear. I thrive under it's discipline and have written three books that way. I love to write...to tell a story and the system inspires me. But, where are those books? Reclining on my computer, visible only to me. Why? In my head, publishing , seems to be an insurmountable task.

I need a goal. That’s easy. The goal is to publish them.
How to achieve that aim? Not so easy.
One manuscript has been edited, adjusted, rewritten, re-edited, and yet still waits on my laptop. Several readers have read it and given positive reports. So wouldn’t you think some publisher would knock on my door and plead to publish it!

After a strong encouragement from the Lord last October, including an Encouragement award from Caleb awards, I have pushed myself to cast off discouragment and return to writing. In that time, I’ve written another book (under the discipline of NaNoWriMo) and finished another that was languishing, awaiting inspiration. Good…but not good enough. They need to, deserve to be read.
How do I make a SMART goal to help me release these books out in the world?
First, I researched and wrote a list of necessary tasks that must be done to have a book ready for publication. It then became obvious. I need a progression of goals…and time limits.

So I created a deadline. I booked tickets for Omega Writer's Conference in September. By then I need to have blurbs, synopsis, book summaries done. I need to be ready to sell myself and my books to an agent. I need to improve my platform. Polish another book. The specific goal is to have two books ready for publication.
I created a goal sheet with monthly goals that can be recorded, trying to keep the goals achievable. The chart enables me to record progress.

To help with this, I’ve also created personal goals, covering health and spiritual well-being. I’ve yet to create a recording chart to track progress in this area. Until I do that it is not a SMART goal. However, my sugar readings, that are measured every day, have dramatically improved.

After conference, I will set another goal. This will be TO GET PUBLISHED. I am determined. I have pushed down the negative voices and will self-publish if necessary. My stories carry God's heart and deserve to be distributed.

Accountability…is another important ‘A’ word. I guess you are now my accountability partners!

How about you? How do you keep yourself on task? In this self-appointed, isolated occupation of writing, how do you keep yourself choosing keyboard over other pressing, time-stealing occupations, like the washing?

'Write it Down' by Jo Wanmer

There is no more important time to write than now. Across the world we see God moving in a new way. A few weeks ago, in Asbury, Kentucky, we saw students at a Wesleyan Bible College start to pray and worship 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Why? It seems that one young student had a revelation of his sin and publicly started to repent at the end of a chapel service. Just as John the Baptist’s call to repentance made way for Jesus, so this repentance opened the way for Jesus and He came! Then He came to other universities, schools, communities. He is pouring out his spirit on Generation Z. It’s a revival marked by worship and love of Jesus.

God is up to something big. There are reports of revival from Indonesia, Uganda, Philippians….. and, yes, here in Australia. Every move of God comes with fresh revelation and new understandings of the Word. Such a revelation caused Martin Luther to nail his thesis to the door, regardless of threats against him. New understandings caused the Wesley brothers to be kicked out of churches. They continued to preach in the fields, highways and byways, while writing over 6,500 hymns.
It is imperative for us to write. We must journal as we sit with God and record the ideas he drops into our hearts. Well known bible passages open wider, mean more, go deeper, affecting our hearts. As writers called by God, we have a responsibility to share the new, to find the words to explain what He’s saying. This is why we are wordsmiths. Where would we be today if those called by God didn’t stop and put pen to paper? God said to Habakkuk, "Write down the revelation and make it plain on tablets so heralds may run with it.” (2:2) He spoke similar words to Jeremiah, John, and others.

On Mt Sinai He used His own finger to write on the stone tablets. God instructed Moses to write. Because of this we have a record of the birth of history. He watches over His Word zealously. During World War II, Warsaw was completely destroyed. Only one wall remained standing vertical. It was part of the building the Bible Society occupied. On the wall was written "Heaven and earth will pass away, but My Word will never pass away."

He guards His word to the extent that even if it is hidden for centuries, He can bring it to light just as He unearthed the Red Sea Scrolls. Could our words be that important? If we are following Him I believe so.

In the age of the internet, methods of communication have changed. Tic-tok, live stream, zoom and other similar apps have pushed us to verbal and video communication. However, I believe the Lord is still saying, ‘WRITE IT DOWN!’ Maybe one day your grandchild will find an old journal and God will use it to speak to them. Or someone will open and old book you’ve written and find Jesus. Take the revelations God gives you at this time and write booklets. write poems, songs and memes. Insert the ideas in your novels. Let your characters walk out deeper spiritual understandings.

This week I have heard several people quote Esther 4:14. See picture for the verse, but I’d like to rephrase it for us, for today.
"If you keep quiet (stop writing) at a time like this, deliverance and relief for our world will arise from some others, but you and your relatives will miss out. Who knows if perhaps you were made a wordsmith for just such a time as this?”

Esther had to risk her life to pass on a message. It was impossible without prayer and fasting, determination, wisdom and self-sacrifice. She could have claimed she was too young, too inexperienced, insignificant. All that was true. But she said yes and God made a way.

All God is asking us for is a ‘Yes’. A willingness to lay down the old long held precious beliefs and embrace Him as he leads us, his church, into the new. Our agreement and prayer enable him to get the right words on our paper.

Father, I pray for every son and daughter of yours who read these words today. May your spirit quicken our hearts and minds. I pray you will open the eyes of our hearts and our imagination that each of us will know You and Your power on our writing.

Jo Wanmer is sitting in her chair in North Brisbane. Today she has pushed past the heavy opposition to write, the opposition that comes against us all. Pray for her that she too will write everything He would have her to write.

Her book 'Though the Bud be Bruised' was published ten years ago. There are other stories in anthologies. Other books are waiting for her to jump the publishing hurdle

Confessions of a lapsed writer by Jo Wanmer

God delights in your obedience to write. Not your skill or your great mastery of words. He is known for using the ‘have nots’ to shame the wise. Just be obedient. Trust God for the rest.

Last week I participated in ‘Unlock Your Book’, an online teaching offered to Christian writers. The speakers included Brian Simmonds, Patricia King and Katherine Rounala.

I watched it live on Zoom, two hours a day for three days. The above statement summarizes the most encouraging content for me.

Brian Simmons is one of my heroes. I was privileged to have lunch with him about 8 years ago. Such a humble, unassuming lover of God. That day he told me he writes/translates 6 hours, every day, without fail. If he has flown all night, he still writes. Always writes, every day.

I remembered that fact with awe, but confess I didn’t act on his incredible example. Hence my writing has waned over the years. His main exhortation in this seminar was to write every day. Even if it is only in your journal, or part of a blog, or even a post, but write every day…no excuses.

I’ve developed excuses for not writing to an art! I have books I know should be finished and yet the excuses mount. At the beginning of the workshop, Brian put his finger on my problem. No, it’s not busyness or laziness, or sickness or family or the weather ….need I go on? No, the root of my problem is fear. Fear intimidates me, gaslights me even. It makes me feel like a grasshopper, when, in truth, I’m an unstoppable, unbeatable son of God.

This week I realise I’ve swallowed this lie. The fear of getting published or self publishing makes me feel the writing effort is a waste. Fear of never being good enough. Fear of how the readers will react to some of my scenes and themes. Fears that I’ve allowed to paralyse me.

How do I deal with this fear? Awareness and confession is a good start. An understanding that False Expectations APPEAR Real…but they are NOT real. As Katherine Raunalo put it. ‘Get over yourself! Stop worrying what people will think. Do the work and the promotion and get it out there.’ I guess that is another way of saying ‘Die to self and be obedient to Him.’

This workshop taught me that all good writing comes out of the secret place, out of time with God. I have known this deep down, but now I must rely on this, not look to my own limited ability. All inspiration comes from the Father, the original creator. I must value, record, treasure every bit of wisdom and understanding that comes to me. Record every idea and value every dream.

Our greatest need, as writers, is for inspiration and creativity. Ask Father for these essentials every day. He promises them. (Pray from Ephesians 1:15ff).

Fight 'Overwhelm'. It is a giant that blocks our ability to hear. We need positive voices that help us pull down that monster. Psalms are a great help, but also friends and colleagues. Encouragement from others frees us to flow in creativity. Our writers' groups, gatherings, and community pages are important here. As Paul says we must to spur each other on.

Patricia King emphasised the importance of body ministry in bringing forth a book. It needs more than just the fingers that write. A good book needs an editor, a designer, beta readers, proof readers and the list goes on. I’ve asked for help in all these areas, but had never before seen the process as the body of Christ working together.

There was so much spiritual richness in this workshop but I’ll close these brief snippets with this list. I hope it is helpful to you.

Brian’s 7 Keys to Overcome Writer’s Block.

1.     Enhance your work space. Change place or outlook. Add a plant or picture.

2.     The most productive working time is 25 minutes. Set an alarm. Move, breathe.

3.     WRITE EVERY DAY

4.     Take short breaks with physical activity

5.     Understand it is okay to be flawed. There is no such thing as a perfect author, book or review

6.     READ, READ, READ for inspiration and learning. We can’t be a writers unless we are also readers.

7.     Don’t call any problem writer’s block. Don’t believe it exists. Resist it. Brian says that a blockage usually is exposing a discipline problem.
