My second thought was, 'I wish you could see my expression so that you know I mean artful as in 'skillful or clever in adapting means to ends; ingenious: an artful choice of metaphors and similes' and 'done with or characterized by art or skill: artful acting; artful repairs' rather than the first dictionary meaning which is 'slyly crafty or cunning; deceitful; tricky: artful schemes' - thus proving the quintessential value of context, body language and subtext to alleviate ambiguity. (Or I could've picked another word, but where's the fun in that? ;)) Mazzy Adamshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/03945841786696357456noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2208627029605402728.post-1882212475149895712018-02-28T10:41:37.324+10:002018-02-28T10:41:37.324+10:00Loved this post. However, trying to describe the non-verbal is quite a challenge. The clip was a great illustration of that. :)<br />Susan Prestonhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07187345684944561717noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2208627029605402728.post-78418769944283642522018-02-28T09:31:14.679+10:002018-02-28T09:31:14.679+10:00Thanks Jeanette! It's a bit harder to implement sometimes, but it's a fun challenge :)Charis Joy Jacksonhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15274372117691594529noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2208627029605402728.post-53493302259715721942018-02-28T09:30:04.885+10:002018-02-28T09:30:04.885+10:00Hey Stella, yes, it's hard to figure out how t...Hey Stella, yes, it's hard to figure out how to still keep the real stuff when it's so stilted. Hahaha, Often if I find I just can't use it, I'll paraphrase. haha Not always something you can do, but hope that helps. The audience had already figured out what was happening but then the characters said it. I know sometimes you need that extra nudge, but so often you don't. Thanks for reading and I hope you're having fun with the subtext!Charis Joy Jacksonhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15274372117691594529noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2208627029605402728.post-78308189909473564722018-02-28T09:26:25.694+10:002018-02-28T09:26:25.694+10:00Hey Anusha! I know most of it was aimed at film, but so much of film writing can transfer to novels too. I love the challenge of speaking volumes through silence :)Charis Joy Jacksonhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15274372117691594529noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2208627029605402728.post-41918866119708674352018-02-26T13:53:47.988+10:002018-02-26T13:53:47.988+10:00Great post, thanks Charis. And as you say, dialogue and subtext is just as important in novel-writing as screen-writing :) Jeanette O'Haganhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11057798704247611224noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2208627029605402728.post-45995815384329345952018-02-26T11:16:03.340+10:002018-02-26T11:16:03.340+10:00Thanks Charis, I always enjoy your articles. I'd love to use it in my books because of what it reveals about people's character or the underlying conflict. But it’s recorded in a formal, stilted way which I'm sure wasn't how it was spoken. I'm still trying to work out how much I can edit it to make it sound more realistic and still put quotes around it indicating that it’s original.Stella Budrikishttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01295423148117553286noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2208627029605402728.post-42754119526119089162018-02-26T08:19:36.482+10:002018-02-26T08:19:36.482+10:00Thanks Charis. Was watching a movie last night - Guy Ritchie's King Arthur. Lots of fun pacing with the dialogue but I also thought there were moments when it was not needed at all, where the audience could have figured it out for themselves. All the best for your novel. That clip was definitely worth watching and yes, the body language spoke volumes. Also agree how silence could speak volumes and is often louder than words. Thank you for the challenge and all the best with your 7 part series! Anusha Atukoralahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00859837228901127984noreply@blogger.com
